Backstroke

Korea’s Joyul juxtaposes the harsh digital and analog skrunk with silky smooth vocals to create a soundscape that’s both inviting and disturbing. The approach is ambient. Found sounds abound. Oddball percussion wrench the tracks out of the ether into something more reminiscent of traditional song form, but the soul of the music is experimental through and through.

Joyul’s not afraid of silence: voided elements are interlaced throughout the cacophony.

On our highlighted track “Backstroke” samples are set aside for a scuzzy guitar that could have been playing lead in a 1980s No Wave punk show.
