Stage 20: Carapaz Goes Out in Style

Richard Carapaz (IGD) scores a hat trick on Stage 20 of La Vuelta 2022. The feat comes a day after Mads Pedersen (TSF) did the same in a Grand Tour where riders won in bunches. The Ecuadorian rider is finishing his contract with Ineos-Grenadiers on a strong note, as he prepares to transfer to Education First-Easypost next season.

Stage 20

Stage 20 was designed to be a day of fierce attacks, as the penultimate stage offered riders their last real chance to fight for the red jersey. The terrain was a rock n roller, with a category-2 and three category-1 climbs, including a more or less uphill finish. But the early exit of Primoz Roglic (TJV) dried up the red jersey competition prematurely. Remco Evenepoel (QST) was too far ahead of everyone else and he was too dominant. Second-place overall rider Enric Mas (MOV) looked more interested in preserving his podium finish than rolling the dice for the red jersey. Instead the day was devoted to heroics for the other jerseys and second-tier riders who saw a chance to make their name on a Grand Tour.

Lawson Craddock

Remco Evenepoel is our unofficial overall winner of La Vuelta 2022 and he will wear the red jersey into Madrid.

Richard Carapaz (IGD) secured his polka dot jersey in style, winning the stage in his King of the Mountain gear. The Ecuadorian rider will wear his prize jersey all the way to Madrid.

Mads Pedersen decimated the field in the points competition and he will wear the green jersey to Madrid.

As of press time the individual stage and overall times were not posted, but, unless catastrophe struck, Lawson Craddock (BEX) figures to be the highest-ranked American overall.

Notable exits: none.
