Stage 6: Vine Finds His Silver Lining

Jay Vine: “He’s in there somewhere. You have to trust us.”

It was a foggy, rainy mountain finish and Jay Vine (Alpecin-Deceuninck) rode in on a wet cloud to win Stage 6 of the 2022 La Vuelta. As commentator Christian Vande Velde remarked: “He’s in there somewhere. You have to trust us.”

Remco Evenepoel

Stage 6 offered a steep category-1 uphill finish, but it was the multiple descents along the way that the wet weather made most dangerous.

EF’s Mark Padun had a lead on the entire race for a chunk of the second half of the course, but lost time in the tricky slick descents. He finally got caught at 6.5km to go and dropped by the lead riders, holding on for 20th on the stage.

Remco Evenepoel (QST) slides into the red jersey with a strong second place finish on the stage, 15 seconds after Vine. Sam Bennett and Victor Langellotti hold on to the green and polka dots jersey, respectively.

American Sepp Kuss (JV) had a strong ride but still drops to 14th in the overall standings. His primary responsibility will be to look after the GC ambitions of teammate Primoz Roglic.

Notable exits: Jan Hirt (IWG) did not start due to Covid.
