Once Upon A Chillwave…

Not Milk is not milk at Silhouette Lounge on Monday, 16 June 2025.

Office Hours, Husbands, and Declaw sandwich the quadruple stack bill.

Worcester’s DoM on the house mix.

DoM came on the pre-show house mix at Silhouette Lounge. A chillwave golden oldie. A Worcester guy.

Every three or four years something like this happens and I all of a sudden remember what a powerful and seemingly effortless songwriter Dom was. Is? He created two fantastic albums, Sun Bronzed Greek Gods (2010) and the Family of Love EP (2011), before falling off the map for a variety of reasons.

A Vice profile in 2017 said he was “finally out of the shit.” Must be true. The piece also said he was writing and producing music for others behind the scenes, so maybe he’s still up to that in 2025.

Here’s Dom in 2021, in a car with Sean Goggins (Lord Jeff), whom I interviewed forever ago AKA 2011.

Declaw

Declaw

Three-piece outfit that you might think to call garage rock, based on the guitar textures, but the tempo changes were too clever for a band that inadvertently huffs carbon monoxide. Declaw is carbon monoxide-free. Has it really been almost two years since I reviewed a track off their full-length Lowlight Reel? Damn, time flies.

Not Milk

Not Milk

The Tallassee fourpiece Not Milk was finishing up its tour at Silhouette Lounge. Eleven gigs in twelve days. And number eleven began with some major tech difficulties, which is not how you want your grand finale to go. The microphones, in particular, were a problem. The lead vocalist offered to just scream over the amplifiers, reasoning that since it was the last gig of the tour, he had no need to preserve his vocal cords for another night. Thankfully, the sound techs pulled it together.

Husbands

Husbands

A fantastic set from Husbands, which delivered a wall of sound from start to finish with little in the way of conventional breaks between songs. A very organic listening experience. Great use of feedback to round off the sharp edges.

Office Hours

Office Hours

Brooklyn’s Office Hours closed out the night with a noisy, raucous set. Did they perform songs off their latest LP Chino Latino? It’s not logically impossible.
