Hump Day News set sail on the stormy seas with “Wrath of the Selkie” at The Rockwell, all part of the Boston Fringe festival. The rock opera blended live music, puppetry, and movement arts into a story about the Selkie, the seal-woman of Celtic folklore.

Playwright Growler Graves staged and performed the opera with help from local music collective Thou Merciless Graves. The production, along with being a genre-bending maritime folktale, served as an allegory for Growler’s 18-month battle with breast cancer.

The story unfolded as a twin narrative: at one level, a battle with the Selkie and the dangerous sea; at another level, a battle with cancer, a topic around which Growler Graves broke the fourth wall, interjecting biographical elements directly into the performance.

A little tragedy, a little comedy, a little song, a 20-foot eel puppet and a fleet of dancing jellyfish…

Welcome to the Boston Fringe.
