Austin Cash: “Untitled #3”

How primitive is it? I’ve been fascinated by the genre concept of “American primitive,” which isn’t necessarily instrument-specific, but often gets appended to guitar projects, usually solo. Such is the case with Chicago’s Austin Cash in our highlighted track “Untitled #3.” It’s a folk picker, and many people would leave it at that. If there’s something primitive about the tune, maybe it’s the trending towards ritual repetition in the patterning. Maybe there’s something there that excavates a deeper layer of folk psychology to reveal a little of what lies beneath? None of this is required for enjoyment of the ditty. Off Hello, Franklin.
