“Landing here is just the beginning.”
Great tagline, courtesy of the made-up neighborhood Boston Landing. One of those shiny neighborhoods, hatched by public/private braintrusts and partnerships, that’s nice enough, I guess, if you can afford to live there. Like the Seaport.
Challenge: find me one of these planned developments that’s affordable for people with household income less than $100,000. And the minority percentage of “affordable units” that developers agree to build, so they can splash the verbiage “affordable housing” on all the marketing material, doesn’t count.
The thing about these neighborhoods is that they’re filled with really nice things. Boston Landing is home to Roadrunner, a superb venue with awesome sound, lighting, and an attractive interior that can accommodate around 3,500 no problem.
Jack’s Mannequin rolled through Roadrunner for a sold-out Friday night jamboree. For being a capacity crowd, the venue still felt remarkably roomy, comfortable, and a good spot to enjoy good music. The general admission floor was filled, but nobody was jammed up shoulder to shoulder closer than they wanted. Sight lines to the performers were great. And the sound sounded good from anywhere in the venue – even at the beer taps located in the back of the house.
It’s a venue that’s built for spectacle, which Jack’s Mannequin delivered. Video montages, special lighting arrays, multi-level performance platforms, and a giant inflatable bathtub-style ducky that Jack’s Mannequin frontman Andrew McMahon used to crowdsurf around the pit towards the end of the night. A real “duck boat.”
Opener Yoke Lore kept things comparatively simple. And the banjo-toting, wifebeater-wearing frontman offers enough melodrama and eroticism to keep the majority female crowd dialed in without the extra bells and whistles.
