Jake McKelvie

Jake McKelvie
The singer-songwriter opened with a solo set, including more than a few cuts from his recent LP A New Kind Of Hat. When playing with a full band, like at the last Nice Fest, Jake McKelvie cuts an alt country figure with a little honky tonk swagger. But going in alone at Deep Cuts, he sounded like more of an electric folk act. Never at a loss for a quick-witted turn of the lyrical phrase.
Friday of Nice, A Fest 2024 in Davis Square.
2nd Grade

2nd Grade
The fronter for 2nd Grade did double duty on Saturday night, also serving as the bassist for the headliner. He trotted out a medium-tempo indie rock jangle and wore a pair of those mondo-sized sunglasses like Lou Reed would wear delivering opaque aphorisms at press conferences in the Berlin Airport, stoned out of his mind, during the 1970s. The band closed with a song that served as a cautionary tale about teenage overpopulation, which, the fronter assured us, was to be digested with tongue in cheek.
Friendship

Friendship
The fourpiece Friendship delivered slow-to-medium tempo jable rock with classic rock and jammy elements. Kind of Neil Young meets Lou Reed meets War On Drugs. The fronter got a big crowd responses when he took a big swig out of his big water container, because it’s 2025, and we’ve all gone insane.
