Michael Arizmendi: “Dependence”
A jazz horn bloweth. A trumpet maybe? Berklee student Michael Arizmendi bookends our highlighted track “Dependence” with rap, so file this one in the jazz hop cabinet. The amount of jazz-plus-anything fusion music coming out of Berklee is disproportionate to society’s actual hunger for the sound. But if you go to a school full of jazz-playing faculty members, you’re not going there to learn how to crochet. You go there to learn jazz, and whatever else gets smeared on top of the sandwich, hip hop or otherwise, is pure gravy. Slathered thick — enjoy!
