Salem 66: “Widow’s Walk”

From out of the early 80s Boston underground. It’s Salem 66, a jangly alt rock outfit consisting of Judy Grunwald, Beth Kaplan, and Susan Merriam, with an ambiance that sounds and feels like a predecessor to some poppier versions of darkwave. No synths on this track though. Shades of MMOSS in there too, a dark complex folk tone. Don Giovanni Records reissued a collection of their songs on a record called Salt. Get that? Not a reissued record – a new collection of old songs on record. Why these songs? Why right now? Maybe the “critical essay by musician Franklin Bruno” accompanying the album will let us know. Another nugget from the history of the Boston underground swims its way to the surface.
