Nemarca

Nemarca

Nemarca performed as a two-piece, including a guitar and violin, pouring out feathery folk tunes in the dart (and pinball) backroom at the Silhouette Lounge.

James Keegan

James Keegan

The country trio wins instant points with me for the beautiful steel pedal work. Great stuff. Keegan James, presumably the frontman and guitarist(?), is a story-telling singer/songwriter with a slight stage drawl. A strong set, but as he sang a song about a weird and wily day trip through New York City, the thought occurred to me that the last thing we need right now is another country band penning “white panic” numbers about the dangers of the urban landscape. If you want to get to “God’s country,” go on & get there already, you know?

Sweet Petunia

Sweet Petunia

The altfolk two-piece Sweet Petunia opened with a twin banjo attack and further cemented their status as one of the most credible whistling acts currently gigging in New England. Strong whistling game. And they played the one about being a bug.

Hound and Handler

Hound and Handler

The Boston-based Americana trio Hound and Handler released their latest album I Feel It All last month. The standup bassist from the Keegan James set made his second appearance of the night, along with a mandolin and guitar. The absence of percussion lent the set a real raw and rootsy folkified air. Music for barn building and staring up at starry nights.
